Care & Maintenance

How do I clean tinted windows? What products should I avoid? How long will the tint last? Maintenance tips from our installers.

Installation & Process

How long does installation take?
Most vehicles take 1.5–3 hours depending on the number of windows and whether old tint needs to be removed. Full vehicles with windshield and old tint removal can take up to 4 hours. We offer loaner vehicles if you need to leave during installation.

Can I roll my windows down right after installation?
No. Wait at least 48–72 hours before rolling down tinted windows. The film needs time to cure and fully adhere to the glass. Rolling windows down too soon can cause the film to shift or peel at the edges.

Why does my tint look hazy or have small bubbles right after installation?
This is completely normal. Moisture trapped between the film and glass during installation needs to evaporate. Small water bubbles and a slight haze will disappear within 2–14 days depending on weather conditions. In Calgary’s dry climate, curing is typically faster (3–5 days in summer, 7–14 days in winter).

Can tint be installed in winter?
Yes. We install year-round in our heated shop. Cold temperatures slow the curing process, so the hazy appearance may last longer (up to 2–3 weeks), but the final result is identical to summer installations.

Do you remove old tint?
Yes, and we include old tint removal at no extra charge with any new tint package. Removing old tint properly takes time — the adhesive must be completely cleaned from the glass before new film can be applied.

Will tint damage my rear window defroster?
No. We apply the film carefully over the defroster lines. The film bonds to the glass surface between and over the lines without affecting their function. In our experience, modern 3M films work perfectly with all factory defrosters.

Product & Performance

What’s the difference between carbon and ceramic tint?
Carbon (3M Colour Stable) uses carbon particles and provides good UV protection and colour stability. Ceramic (3M Ceramic IR) uses nano-ceramic particles and rejects significantly more infrared heat — up to 95% vs. 47–53% for carbon. Ceramic costs more but provides a noticeably cooler cabin. Full comparison here.

Will window tint interfere with my electronics?
Not if you use non-metallic film. All 3M automotive films we install (Colour Stable, Ceramic IR, Crystalline) are non-metallic and will not interfere with GPS, Bluetooth, cellular, satellite radio, toll transponders, or garage door openers. Metallic films — which we do not install — can cause interference.

How dark can I go legally in Alberta?
Alberta doesn’t specify a minimum VLT percentage, but officers can ticket you if visibility appears impaired. We recommend 30%+ VLT on front windows and any shade on rear windows. Full legal details here.

Does window tint actually reduce heat?
Yes, measurably. 3M Ceramic IR rejects up to 66% of total solar energy and up to 95% of infrared heat. In a parked vehicle in direct sun, this can mean a 10–15°C reduction in cabin temperature. While driving, the A/C reaches target temperature faster and cycles less frequently.

How long does window tint last?
3M automotive films are designed to last the life of the vehicle. Colour Stable, Ceramic IR, and Crystalline all come with a manufacturer warranty covering bubbling, peeling, cracking, and discolouration. We have 3M films on customer vehicles that look identical after 10+ years.

Care & Maintenance

How do I clean tinted windows?
Use a soft microfibre cloth and any ammonia-free glass cleaner. Avoid paper towels (they can scratch the film) and any cleaner containing ammonia (it degrades the adhesive over time). Simple soap and water works fine.

Can I use a squeegee on tinted windows?
A rubber squeegee is fine. Avoid metal scrapers or razor blades on the interior (tinted) surface — they will scratch or cut the film.

What if my tint gets scratched or damaged?
Minor scratches on the exterior surface of the film can sometimes be buffed out. Deeper damage requires replacing the film on that window. Under 3M’s manufacturer warranty, film defects (bubbling, discolouration, delamination) are covered. Physical damage from objects or improper cleaning is not warranty-covered but we can replace individual windows at a reasonable cost.

Does tint affect visibility at night?
Darker shades reduce nighttime visibility to some degree. This is why we recommend moderate shades (30–50% VLT) on front windows. Rear windows at any darkness have minimal impact on driving since you use mirrors. For the best night visibility with maximum heat rejection, 3M Crystalline at 50–70% VLT is the optimal choice.

Note: The current Alberta vehicle equipment laws prohibit installing window tint on the windshield and front side windows. Although, any level of darkness can be used on back side and rear windows. On windshields, only the tinting installed by the car manufacturer is allowed, as are clear un-tinted frost shields or window stickers which do not impair the driver’s vision. Each Canadian province has its own rules and regulations and violating vehicle equipment laws can get you cited even when visiting other provinces. Some of our window tinting packages include the front windshield and front side windows. If you choose one of these packages, we assume no responsibility for your vehicle or its legality. It is up to the consumer to ensure that no provincial laws are being broken by having an automobile with an obstructed view.
