Windshield Tint — Reduce Glare and Heat Where It Matters Most
A ceramic or Crystalline windshield tint strip or full windshield film can block up to 97% of infrared heat before it enters the cabin.
Your windshield lets in the most UV exposure. Tinting it blocks 99.9% of ultraviolet radiation, protecting your face, arms, and dashboard.
Reduce blinding glare from low-angle winter sun and summer highway reflection — especially important on Calgary's east-west corridors.
We use light-transmitting ceramic films (70%+ VLT) that maintain legal visibility while still rejecting significant heat and UV.
Most people think of window tinting as something you do to the side and rear windows. But the windshield is the largest glass surface on your vehicle, and it’s responsible for the majority of solar heat and UV radiation entering the cabin. Tinting your windshield can make a bigger difference to cabin comfort than tinting all other windows combined.
In Calgary, windshield tinting addresses two specific problems. In summer, the high-altitude sun (Calgary sits at 1,045m elevation) produces intense UV and IR radiation. In winter, low-angle sun creates blinding glare, especially on east-west roads like Memorial Drive, Glenmore Trail, and 16th Avenue.
Full Windshield Film — A single sheet of ceramic or Crystalline film applied to the entire windshield. This provides maximum heat and UV rejection. We use only 3M Ceramic IR or Crystalline films at 70% VLT or higher for windshield applications to maintain legal visibility.
Windshield Sun Strip (Visor Strip) — A band of film applied across the top 4–6 inches of the windshield. This targets the most common glare zone without covering the full windshield. Available in darker shades since it sits above the driver’s primary line of sight.
| Film | VLT | IR Rejection | UV Rejection | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3M Ceramic IR (IRN 70) | 73% | 95% | 99.9% | Best value windshield film |
| 3M Crystalline (CR 90) | 90% | 97% | 99.9% | Nearly invisible, maximum heat rejection |
Both options are virtually invisible on the windshield while providing dramatic heat and UV reduction.
Yes, with conditions. Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act requires the windshield to maintain adequate visibility. There is no specific VLT percentage written into the provincial regulations for windshields (unlike some US states), but law enforcement can issue a ticket if they determine visibility is impaired.
In practice, films at 70% VLT or higher are widely accepted because they transmit more than enough light for safe driving. The 3M Crystalline CR 90 at 90% VLT is essentially undetectable — even experienced officers cannot tell it’s there — while still blocking 97% of infrared heat.
We only install windshield films that maintain high light transmission. We will not install dark tint on a windshield. For complete details on Alberta tint regulations, visit our Alberta Window Tint Laws page.
