3M Ceramic IR — Advanced Heat Rejection for Calgary Vehicles
3M Ceramic IR uses nano-ceramic particle technology to block up to 95% of infrared heat energy entering your vehicle.
Contains zero metals — your GPS, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and cell signals pass through without any disruption.
Maintains excellent nighttime visibility with low reflectivity on the interior surface — critical during Calgary's long winter nights.
Every installation is backed by a comprehensive 3M manufacturer warranty covering bubbling, peeling, cracking, and discolouration.
3M Ceramic IR is the mid-tier ceramic window film in 3M’s automotive lineup, positioned between the entry-level Colour Stable series and the premium Crystalline series. It uses nano-ceramic particles rather than dyes, carbon, or metals to achieve heat rejection — which means it won’t fade purple over time and won’t interfere with electronic signals.
Ceramic IR is the most popular choice among our Calgary customers because it offers the best balance of performance and value. It rejects significantly more heat than the carbon-based Colour Stable while costing less than Crystalline. For most Calgary drivers dealing with intense summer sun on their commute along Deerfoot Trail or Stoney Trail, Ceramic IR provides more than enough heat rejection to keep the cabin comfortable.
| Shade | VLT | IR Rejection | UV Rejection | TSER |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IRN 70 | 73% | 95% | 99.9% | 59% |
| IRN 60 | 62% | 95% | 99.9% | 62% |
| IRN 50 | 46% | 95% | 99.9% | 59% |
| IRN 40 | 38% | 95% | 99.9% | 62% |
| IRN 20 | 15% | 95% | 99.9% | 66% |
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) = how much light passes through the film. Lower numbers mean darker tint. IR Rejection = infrared heat energy blocked. UV Rejection = ultraviolet radiation blocked. TSER = Total Solar Energy Rejected, the single best metric for overall heat performance.
3M makes three automotive window film lines. Here’s how they compare:
Colour Stable (Carbon-Based) — The entry point. Uses non-metallic carbon technology. Blocks moderate heat and 99% UV. Best for drivers who primarily want privacy and UV protection without a significant investment. Will not fade to purple like cheap dyed films. Learn more about Colour Stable.
Ceramic IR (You Are Here) — The best value. Nano-ceramic particles reject up to 95% of infrared energy. Noticeably cooler cabin than Colour Stable, especially in direct sun. Zero signal interference. This is the most-installed film at our shop.
Crystalline (Premium) — 3M’s flagship. Proprietary 200+ layer nano-technology rejects up to 97% of IR heat. Offers the highest optical clarity of any film on the market. Available in very light shades that reject extreme heat while maintaining a near-factory glass appearance. Learn more about Crystalline.
